How to choose bow platform for a sailing yacht
A bowsprit does more than enhance the look and quality of your boat – it transforms your entire boating experience. Harness the wind’s full potential with a gennaker or Code Zero sail, and explore every possible (and impossible) shore with ease. Boarding becomes effortless, even when your legs are too short or too tired. Store your anchor forward to free up deck space and prevent unwanted scratches on your GRP while retrieving it above the waterline. A well-chosen bowsprit isn’t just an upgrade – it’s a game-changer for your adventures at sea.

Step-by-step Guide
Extend your boating experience
Think long term
A bow platform is an investment that boosts both the functionality and value of your boat. Since installing one requires drilling into the hull of your beloved sailboat, it’s crucial to choose a type that meets your needs now and in the future. Your bow platform will be a part of your boat for a long time, outliving your ownership and serving future owners as well.
Make sure it is strong enough
Båtsystem bowsprits are engineered to meet a wide spectrum of needs, from casual boating to demanding sailing and anchoring in tough sea conditions. It’s wise to invest in a model that won’t limit your adventures, either now or in the future
Match it with the hull lines
An ill-fitting bow platform can truly diminish your boat’s otherwise beautiful lines. When installing, it’s critical to align the platform perfectly with your hull’s contours so it appears to be a seamless, elegant extension of your vessel.

Key considerations
To select the ideal bow platform for your boat, you’ll need to gather some specific information about your vessel and the functionalities you desire. Beyond the boat’s overall size, there are two primary questions to consider:
- Do you store an anchor in the bow, and if so, what is its weight?
- Do you sail with a gennaker or a Code-0 sail?
The best bowsprit for your boat will ultimately depend on its size, the size of your gennaker, and whether you store an anchor in the bow. Additionally, ensure the bowsprit extends sufficiently far forward of the pulpit to allow for easy jibing.
How to measure
To accurately estimate how far the bowsprit will extend forward of your boat’s bow, we recommend a simple measuring technique.
First, identify the width between the hull mounting points on your chosen bowsprit. For instance, on our HP65 bowsprit, this measurement is 330 mm. Take this exact measurement and mark where these mounting points would roughly align across your boat’s bow. This will give you an initial idea of the bowsprit’s protrusion.
This exercise will not only show you the bowsprit’s forward extension but also help you visualize the available deck space after the teak planks have been cut to fit.
Important Note Regarding Your Pulpit:
Pay close attention to how far your pulpit extends forward. You’ll want to ensure there’s still ample clear space on the bow in front of the pulpit for comfortable movement. On many pulpit designs, the pulpit itself extends significantly forward of the bow. In such cases, a longer bowsprit may be necessary to achieve optimal functionality and ensure sufficient working room.
